In a world where material knowledge, know-how and curiosity are being lost, Techne aims to establish a new kind of system, producing worthy items with function and soul, merging traditional and digital

Fashion Design Master’s Degree Thesis at Politecnico di Milano

Techne strives to establish a new system in the fashion environment, a new kind of dialogue where the designer’s vision, the digital maker’s innovative mind, the industrial world and the craftsman’s skill merge.

The project aims to anticipate a future scenario where technology and traditional techniques merge, where networks of professionals and companies create hybridization processes for the fashion industry, blurring the boundaries between physical and digital, tradition and innovation.

To start production in small series, whose elements have meaning. Not “artistic” “sculpture clothes”, nor identical homologated copies for mass consumption, but limited-edition series, objects with a soul.

To establish workshops with 3D printers, hand-looms and smart materials, crafting functional items with a strong aesthetic, which customers can really appreciate and use comfortably in their daily lives.

  • Soft, yet permanent 3D printed shapes are generated by merging two materials, a surface, and a structure. By tensioning an elastic textile, and applying a 2D TPU pattern, organic forms are created.

Unique materials, bonded with the latest technology, interact.

To date, an application of this kind has never been implemented in a ready-to-wear fashion collection

  • The project was developed with Gaetano Rossini and Eurojersey S.p.a., two Lombardy-based textile brands.

Rossini&Rossini has been producing high quality, innovative 3D woven fabrics since 1962. Hybrids between high-end, elegant and sportswear, sophisticatedly engineered textiles.

Eurojersey S.p.a. produces warp knit fabrics, thanks to a range called Sensitive® Fabrics. These textiles present innovative properties and great advantages, especially in sportswear, swimwear, and intimate apparel. The presence of Lycra in their structure characterizes a three-dimensional elasticity, for freedom of movement and fit.

  • Techne's textiles are the result of designers working side to side with artisans. It was a mutual exchange, a two-way conversation.

The final product is a blend of effects chosen in collaboration, thought together: an unexpected mix of materials, structures, and surfaces.

Through this co-creation process, the project underlines a new network of relationships which hand-weaving craftsmanship can enter into, in a city like Milan, and how specific characteristics of the artisanal modus operandi can be kept and enhanced, while creating new value in a broader, different reality.
